Education and Outreach Efforts
In the U.S. General Accounting Office's 2003 report Invasive Species: Federal Efforts and State Perspectives on Challenges and National Leadership, state officials identified barriers that make managing invasive species difficult. Not surprisingly, the highest-ranked barrier was a lack of federal funding to create management plans for monitoring, detection, inspection, enforcement, and research activities. But insufficient public education and outreach (E/O) efforts ranked second, identified by 60 percent of those responding as a "great" or "very great" gap in federal legislation related to both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species (U.S. GAO 2003).
Education and Outreach Projects at CLR
As the prevention of new introductions and early detection of new ANS invasions are assisted by eduction and outreach to both the general public and to natural resources personnel, many of the projects conducted by CLR contain an education and outreach component. In addition, CLR has leant its expertise on education and outreach efforts to larger collaborative projects throughout the region.
An Education and Outreach Strategy and Implementation Plan for
the Oregon Invasive Species Council
Invasive species pose an enormous threat to the ecosystems, economy, and health of humans, animals, and plants in Oregon. Although methods exist to control some invasive species, the Oregon Invasive Species Council (OISC) is working to prevent the worst invaders from becoming established in the first place. Unfortunately many people remain unaware that invasive species cause serious problems and that human actions can enable their introduction and spread. More...
An Inventory of Education and Outreach Materials
Education on aquatic invasive species (AIS) impacts and management is critical to effective prevention efforts. While outreach materials come in many forms, the most common products are brochures, signs, handouts and other graphics aimed at specific audiences or advancing specific messages. To avoid duplication of effort, enhance exchange of readily available information, and to help educators, managers and outreach personnel evaluate gaps in existing outreach efforts we have created a regional inventory for these materials.
